DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINATION PACKET

Rev. Gary A. McCaslin – Distinguished Citizen 2016

The Painted Post Area Board of Trade is proud to present the 2016 Distinguished Citizen Award to Rev. Gary A. McCaslin.
Each year the Board of Trade chooses a local citizen for this honor based on service and dedication to the community and its citizens. This year’s recipient is an outstanding example of what it takes to truly be a “Distinguished Citizen”.

Gary McCaslin served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Painted Post from 1997 to his retirement in 2013. During those 16 years he was also the clergy representative of the Choice Community Project in the Corning-Painted Post School District, serving as the president of the group’s first Board of Directors. He has acted as chaplain to the Painted Post Fire Department for the past 17 years and was president of the Corning Vicinity Faith Community from 2004 to 2016. Additionally he was an active member of the Corning Vicinity Council of Churches for 5 years.

Gary’s dedication to the betterment of our community is evident in his involvement with Catholic Charities of Steuben County (Board of Directors), Peaceful Gatherings, Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity (Board of Directors), and Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes (Board of Directors). All ages benefit from his hard work: he is a volunteer for Trust in the Lives of Older Women through the Corning Senior Center as well as with EQUAL, an LGBT support group at Corning Community College. In 2010 Gary acted as clergy representative for the formation of a support group for LGBT students at East High School.

The growth and interest in area events benefitting people in need are due in large part to Gary’s leadership. He participated for many years in organizing the Corning CROP Hunger Walk for Church World Service, as well as the World AIDS Day program at CCC. Today he brightens the day for clients of Meals on Wheels with his cheerful deliveries.

The Painted Post Area Board of Trade established the Distinguished Citizen Award to publicly recognize individuals who have unselfishly volunteered their time to make a significant sustained contribution to the Painted Post area. We are honored to present the 2016 award to Rev. Gary McCaslin.

It is our goal with the launch of PaintedPostNY.com to bring the best the Internet has to offer to our community. We will be our communities digital information center and you will be a part of the excitement we are creating.

Community Commitment

The future for the PPABOT promises to keep it busier than ever. The issues that we must address are numerous. We must continue to work with and support the planned growth of the area in this economic boom. We must look at redeveloping our existing business districts and housing assets to meet the immediate needs of the entire community. We need to have a seat at all the tables that are making the decisions for planning, development, government and community enhancements.

Our unofficial motto is "roll up your sleeves and go to work." We have always done this, and I trust, with your help, that we always will.
